Uh hi, i have watched Naruto from episode 1 to 217 now, and it occured to me the other day, that i still have NO idea who or what the heck 'Dattebayo' is. After watching the series since the beginning, i figured it was a japanese word with multiple meanings, but just incase, i'd appreciate it if someone would clear it all up for me. Arigato. btw im Nav . .

    Hello, Nav.

Check this out to learn about the fan sub group Dattebayo: X

As for the meaning of it, you're gonna have to search the forums for your answer...

I am teh dattebayo.... uh actually i think it means nothing. I have found no direct translations in any of the places i have searched. The english dub inserted the phrase believe it because they didnt think americans would appreciate a character with a catch phrase that meant nothing in English. example "Im gonna be hOKage one day, bumflan" random collection of words imo.

    Welcome. :hug

I always though the phrase 'Dattebayo' meant 'Believe it'. In the English, his signature phrase is that, and in the Japanese, it's 'Dattebayo'.
But it appears your question was already answered. Hope I helped anyway. ^_^

Dattebayo does NOT mean believe-it. Viz wanted to give Naruto a catch phrase. Dattebayo doesnt translate into anything. Its the equivilant of saying "like" in every sentence.

its sexual innuendo, and kishimotos way of subliminally telling his readers to shed their clothes and send pics.

UGHH I've already answered it many times before and so have others.

    Short and sweet:
    It's actually ttebayo.
It has no translation, it is completely untranslatable, and sounds very childish and annoying. Something you wouldn't hear in real life. It basically is just a different way to end a sentence, and emphasizes what he says

It doesn't not mean "Believe it"

    Shin 信 means Trust
    Shinjiru 信じる means Believe.

Dattebayo is just a childish way to end Naruto's sentences.

Just like ending sentence words like:
    Desu yo
    Deshou
    Da yo
    Daro

I don't know if you've watched Tonagura, but one of the characters end her sentences with "De Arisu". Yet another childish way to end sentences. Viz may as well translate that to "Believe it".
