Okay, so Neji goes down, right? All well and dramatic (or at least it's trying to be). But then Kishimoto goes and ruins the moment with the panel of the bird getting impaled (http://mangastream.com/read/naruto/93233307/20).

I realize that Neji had always been associated with birds, symbolically speaking, whether in regards to the caged bird motif or his bit during the last arc of Part I.

Unfortunately, when the bird symbolism reappeared, it just came off like some sort of awkwardly executed sight gag.

I laughed when I saw that, too. I was like "Oh shit, he's doing that AGAIN? He just did it with Itachi six months ago."

Dammit, I didn't notice that it got impaled on the first reading! I thought it had just flown away, symbolizing that he had done his life's work and could be free or something. God, that bird being impaled is ridiculous. Oh well, maybe it's fitting; after all, he did end up protecting the main branch.

Well... tbh, I think there are two birds, one is flying away, while the other is the one that got impaled by the 'spears' (probably, as the context implied, it died protecting the flying away one).

Ofcourse. The bird was just a random casualty of war. Probably got impaled because Neji's Kaiten was deflecting the spears to random directions.

I felt sad when even the bird was shot down.

This will be amazing in the anime if they handle this well.

It was the one panel I skipped. Sometimes I skip words entirely in my typing though, so no biggie.

It wouldn't be so bad IMO, if not for the "!!" of the bird. The bird's surprise contrasts with Neji's concious sacrifice.

    The bird was indeed hilarious.

I don't know what it was supposed to symbolize. Shouldn't the bird be flying away to symbolize Neji's freedom? Instead, its like "I'm free, I'm free!" *splat* Madara: Guess you aren't motherfucker. :lmao

Obiito killing the bird was perfect. That final scene was point/ counterpoint. Neji was symbolized in the bird as finally being free. Obito's counterpoint to that was "no, Neji is just dead. Now do you see what I'm talking about? All your ideas are bullshit." That was exactly what Kishi wanted to convey. The villain mocking the heroes best efforts as pure futility.
