Liked him in part 1 then went to shit once he started lusting after Sasuke.

    Kage summit arc butchered him

    3/10 which is generous

Was gonna go for 2/10 but I'll give him a 3 purely because of Part 1 Naruto.

I liked his steely determination, his status of being an underdog, never giving in attitude, his character during that time made you actually root for him. The Gaara fight, against Kabuto that was Naruto at his best.

Then Part 2 came along and he became nonexistent at the beginning, became a Sasuke addict, was found out to be a destined child which obviously was the lowest point in the entire series along with all the hyperventilating, taking beatings like a bitch from Karui to protect a terrorist, TnJ'ing his opponents etc etc, all these events ruined him.

1 is for absolute shitters like Karin (worst character bar none), Kaguya etc

    part 1 Naruto 10/10

Literally beefed every person he met no fucks given. The jiraiya talk with oro about ninjas needing the guts to never give up and then you see Naruto blocking a punch with his face... The Negi fight is one of my favourite moments of anime. I personally did see Naruto as an underdog up until then. He had weak clones, was stupid, poor control of the kyuubi, etc. That victory turned him into one of my favourites of the series. I could go on, but yeah part 1 Naruto was a badass.

part 2 was outright awful until the pain arc, where he finally felt like a main character again. I didn't mind the rest tbh, but it wasn't part 1...

    so 9/10 overall

After a little thinking im gonna go for a 6. Naruto's 'one-liners' makes him mostly the plot engine/motor in Naruto. He kinda stopped being a character for being an engine. In part 1 it made sense. RandomDouche: "You'll never achieve your goal, you are a loser", Naruto: "I'll never give up". Makes sense tbh, he's countering the perceiving notion of others and not take for granted what others want him to be. It even links with his desire of others to see him as Naruto not as a Kyuubi's vessel. In part 2, with this whole peace scenario. Pain: "What is your answer, do you have a plan to achieve 'this peace' you are talking about?", Naruto: "No, but i'm not gonna give up". Naruto as a character stops being challenged and just moves because. There is a point in which you stop and think why you move rather than just moving. Naruto was the latter, never knowing why he moves, but he moved nonetheless because 'he'll never give up'. To what? To who?, to what objective? Danzo was conveniently disposed by Sasuke so that Naruto was never challenged in one of his core ideals which was the "Will of Fire". Yet Danzo represented what happened if you take 'one liners' too far. Circumstances changes, ideals evolve adding exceptions. Best case is what Danzo claims since he has no exceptions, he could dispose anyone to 'protect the village'. He could have challenged Naruto, but Kishi decided it was too complicated and didn't want him to. Naruto at the end lacked challenges.

Naruto needing to have a similar backstory so that he could convert the other guy. It was almost insufferable at the end. Worse in the anime adding him a similar discrimination towards Sasuke in the last fight, which i was rofl. Afaik, Sasuke was not in the same condition, he was liked by his peers superficially tho but he was liked. That need to bend characters so that they fit in a Naruto-like sad backstory rubbed me the wrong way.

A difference between Part 1 and 2 that I noticed:

In Part 1, Naruto was said to have "a misterious power to connect with everyone". And it was believable: when he met Zabuza and Haku, he empathized with them despite being his enemy, He cried for Haku's death, he cared for his and Zabuza's conflict, he managed to make Zabuza open his heart because he showed empathy.

And bare in mind: during those moments, Naruto was convinced that Sasuke was dead.

In Part 2, all Naruto has to do is to deal with someone who remind him of himself, and make all the arguments to resolve the conflict about himself.
Everyone had to listen to Naruto and empathized with him, and never the other way around (unless we're talking about someone who resembles Naruto in some way, like wanting to be hokage or being a loner in childhood).

Case in point: during the war, Naruto was truly able to unite everyone under his flag, only after Ino connected everyone's mind with Naruto's. Each and every one of the unknown soldier understood Naruto's feelings and gained strenght because of him.

So much for "I wish that one day people can understand each other" as Jiraiya said.
In the end, harmony between all the nations was achieved because people understood Naruto.

Lemme just say that the "I want the village to acknowledge me" concept was delivered quite well throughout the series at some point, imo. I really enjoyed when Ebisu has all those flashbacks in the Pain Arc. We kinda didn't know the village thoughts about Naruto accomplishments earlier in part 1 or at the beginning of part 2. Ex: Zabuza Arc, vs Neji, rescuing Gaara, his mission to retrieve Sasuke, etc. (it's in chapter 426/ In the anime, they actually did a better job on that part.)

I feel that the "Destiny" (could had been better developed), "Child Prophecy", "Narujesus" and him having almost an "heart attack" over Sasuke (that was too much) are the character major falls.

Spoiler: Adult Naruto Manga vs Movie
Saw this on tumblr: "There’s a slight character development in Naruto for remaining in his seat; unlike in Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Naruto immediately stood up from his seat when Bolt left the Hokage office. I’d rather prefer this scene in the manga over the similar movie’s scene. Naruto’s position by remaining in his seat indicate that he’s composed in the manga."

I used to truly adore him in part 1: he was true, he was different, I totally understand why and how Hinata felt that way toward him during chuunin exam.
He was genuine, always ready to fight even losing battles, always searching for love and affection.

But in part 2 his childish side became one of his biggest flaw to me... He solved everything just by two single words, no growth at all, always good, always perfect, always with the right answer...
The first Naruto might not have all the answers but could reach hearts... The second one... well, no, not even by chance.
Ah, also "Obito was the coolest guy".

Naruto gets a five out of ten from me. Part I and some of part 3 carries him up to 10 but part II takes five points away from him.

Inner Deana after reading part I: Oh my god. This little brat is shaping to be my favorite shonen hero ever. :ohyou

Inner Deana/Obi Wan/Samuel L. Jackson after part II: You were the chosen one mfer!!! :stop
