    from the Kansas City Star:

Long story short: governor is butthurt by some kid's opinion, and a cowardly pencil-pusher who's just trying to save face shows the world just how petty and sniveling and spineless he is by blackmailing a girl's college transcripts to twist her arm into writing empty words. :mad

This is what our country has come to, my fellow Americans. :cussing

Principal is a piece of shit and doesn't deserve the position of a school administrator. By doing this they are restricting her right to freedom of speech and she should refuse to write the letter, and if the principal decides to include a post it note on her transcripts over it she should threaten to sue for depriving her of her first amendment. Of course she should also ask for damages (only the money required to pay her lawyer as she would be guaranteed to win, especially with this coming to light.)

I can understand the principles decision. The girl showed a lack of respect and should be made to apologize for it.

I'm surprised to see a student blackmailed with no mention of sex.

She should have counter-threatened the principal with a lawsuit from the ACLU. This is the type of stuff they love. :LOS

I don't care if they think she showed a lack of respect. She's in the US and we have freedom of speech, or we're supposed to. She didn't threaten him, or say anything that could make any legal trouble for her. Both the governor and the principal need to shut the hell up and get off the girl's case. I think THEY should be the ones who owe HER an apology for trying to deprive her of her rights :notrust

Gimme a break. If they're monitoring for threats against the guy, fine. Other than that, they have no complaint what anybody says about him. If he wants nobody to post anything bad about the government let him pack up and move to Cuba :mad

Not that I support the principal in the slightest, but the governor's office SHOULD be monitoring for his name on the internet. When you're a public figure whose entire job came about because of your public reputation, Googling yourself is pretty much standard operating procedure.

Yeah, they want to know what the public thinks about him. Then they try to boost him up in areas where people find him lacking. That's ok, that's normal. They have no right to make trouble for anyone who expresses an unfavorable opinion of him. The fact that the girl's tweet was even presented as a complaint to the school principal is ridiculous. It tells me the governor's office is monitoring with just that purpose in mind, to make trouble for those who speak tweet against him

If I was the principal, I'd simply inform her parents that their daughter was texting on her phone when she was supposed to be paying attention to a speech from the governor.

Uuuugh, hahahah, gives me another to reason to both laugh at Shawnee Mission East, and our government. I went to Shawnee Mission South and we didn't think highly of East as per the typical high school rivalries or whatever. >_> That aside, I'm surprised he cared enough. Sure it teaches the girl a lesson, and she should have more respect than that, and it was obvious that she was just trying to get reactions and show off, buuut.. the Gov should've just taken it with a grain of salt. Granted, I can see both sides and all, it's just.. that was stupid. That entire thing was stupid. Not even entirely sure what to say.

One explanation I can think of for the principal's ultimatum - if it is true - is the fear for slashed budgets for his school.

I can understand both sides, however, the governor should have just taken what happened with a grain and salt, and the principal did not need to threaten her with such an ultimatum, and just let the girl write the apology, as she should have be a little more respectful (not saying she's not allowed to voice her opinion) and for the school's sake.

Someone who was contacted by the governor's office and told to do just that. The principle wouldn't even know if the governor's staff hand't told him. And they wouldn't call the principle just to let him know his students used twitter. He told the principle to make the student apologize. Look at what the governor's dude said about "mutual respect."

It was the governor or his staff being an asshole and using their power to "get even" with a high school girl who said something they didn't like about them on the internet.

You're more worried about this than the fact that the governor's staff and principle bullied her over this? Priorities, please.

She's a high school student. She acted like she was a child. What is the excuse of the governor and his staff for acting like high school bullies?

She's 18 years old and legally an adult. She can say whatever the fuck she wants about him as long as it's not a threat to harm him in any way.

Anyways, she should refuse to apologise and if the principal makes a note of it on her record then she should sue the school. I highly doubt she'd lose and she'd get her lawyer fees paid and likely get a free ride to whatever University she wants on the school boards dime and that principal would probably get fired for losing the school board that much money.
