For those who don't know, Song of Ice and Fire is a projected 7 book fantasy series (it has 4 books out currently) by George R.R Martin, and generally considered among the top 3 best current fantasy series in any list. One thing I can say about the series is that it is hard-core. There's no gallant heroes, or perfect characters here, and more often than not, there's no guarantee that your favorite character will live as the story progresses. It's gritty, dark, real, and epic in every sense of the word.

It was recently reported that there will be a 7 season series based on one year for each book on HBO:

    Spoiler: news item

    X

I personally think it'll be awesome on HBO, especially since they have a proven track record with such dark series (like Rome for example), and their shows are the best on TV (especially The Wire). If it's even possible that this can be done right, I'm sure HBO could pull it off. It's also good to know that George R.R Martin is penning a few episodes himself, and overseeing everything (check his X). He also said that it may be coming out next year in 2008 (let's hope!)

Anyone who's read this series should be very excited, and for those who haven't, well you guys will have a pleasant surprise if you ever check it out.

Damn. I hadn't heard of it.

I haven't been a good HBO watcher lately though since i usually tune in like clockwork when Entourage and Sopranos come on. This sounds very interesting though. I'll make sure to watch.

I'll definitely see this - if it's even half as good as the books, it'll be excellent.

I just started the reading the books recently, I am almost done with the second book A Clash of Kings. Both books are great and I am interested in seeing this series on HBO.

Song of Ice and Fire, The Preacher, and the possible return of Spawn, HBO is really kicking it up a notch it seems. HBO can't do wrong it seems; Rome, Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, Entourage, Oz, the list goes on and on of awesome shows that they have had.

HBO is my favorite channel in terms of its ridiculously high output of awesome shows. I can't even keep up with them all--power overwhelming! :arg

Regardless, this and the Sookie series are going to be watched religiously over here on my end. :nod

^Just wait till the seasons are released on DVD, or maybe watch on Youtube if it's available.

I also agree with everyone about HBO being the best choice especially considering how well known they are for high quality series. Truth to tell, I couldn't imagine any other network because Song of Ice and Fire is pretty dark. At the very least it'll contain material similar to what's shown in Rome, though on an even more extreme level.

there is sort of actually :O

latest thing from GRRMs "blog" is this

I have some exciting news to share.

(But please, guys and gals, don't get TOO excited. This is what it is, and so far that's all it is, so don't make any assumptions).

HBO has just exercised its option, and purchased the television rights to A GAME OF THRONES.

For those of you who don't know Hollywood, an option gives a production company the right to buy a property (a book, a screenplay, whatever) at a certain agreed-upon price for a certain period of time (a year, six months, whatever). When that time runs out, they can let the option lapse, renew the option, or exercise the option and buy the property. The last is what HBO has just done.

What they have NOT done is greenlight the project. A GAME OF THRONES remains in development. They're still budgeting, still looking at locations (Spain and the Czech Republic at present, I hear). No decision has been reached, so any celebration would be premature. In Hollywood it is always best not to assume something is going to happen until it actually happens.

Even so... this is a very encouraging sign, and one that suggests a continued high level of enthusiasm and commitment for A GAME OF THRONES at HBO.

    So keep your fingers crossed.

Knowing MY luck the Producers will probably be Dany and Jon fans who think they are the center of the Universe ... so the show will focus more on those 2 than the rest of the cast

Meaning more of the Twit twins and less of the actual good Characters like Tyrion Bran and arya

    There is X.

Apparently the article is slightly out-dated - the pilot has already been approved and is going into pre-production. The word i hear on forums is that it will be a twelve episodes a series, each series covering the events of one book, though that's just hear say at the moment.

Seeing as the BBC is going to burden a sizeable chunk of the budget then the chances that they are going to go through with this is looking very good. I say that it is now safe to get excited.

Well considering how excellent HBO has been with most of their series so far, and the fact that they're actually working closely with George Martin, convinces me that this could be a great adaption. I can't really picture how they will pull it off yet though:) Needs a lot of talented actors if they're going to stay true to the characters from the books.

I'll definitely watch this; weekly if there's a UK equivalent to HBO that shows it, or if not, via Youtube and DVD.

It's also interesting to note this little tidbit from the quoted article in the first post:
Do I dare hope that G.R.R. Martin finishes ASOIAF by 2011? :wtf

Considering the length between the other releases after the third book, I wouldn't expect it to be done until 10 years. There is a lot to write.. and it's all good. Better that then a rushed trainwreck ending. I just hope he doesn't gain a disease or something, it happened to Robert Jordan:\ Although Wheel of time sort failed after the 4-5 book.

And Robert Jordan and George Martin were good friends as well, fate better not play any tricks:mad

Well, to be fair GRRM had to scrap more than half of A Dance with Dragons, so he pretty much spent a lot of time finishing with what he already had to just scrap it, then the ones he didn't scrap he had to rewrite to fit the other chapters.

Stop making excuses. The guy had a substantial amount of material written. He should know the gist of the plot he wants to tell. The guy is being absolutely glacial.

I'm looking forward to the actor they get for Tyrion Lannister, since he's one of my favourite characters in the book. He could be one of the hardest to portray from the book I think....

Fans have suggested Thomas Dekker a lot for the roll of Jon Snow, I swear if I see an emo fag as the roll of Jon Snow I won't watch it past that second.

That's not really a bad suggestion, he did a good job on Heroes. I haven't seen The Sarah Connor Chronicles though. So hard for me to say anything there.

Well I think he might have his emo moments, seeing as he had some of them in the book. A very good character as well I believe, but I think HBO should do every character from the book justice.

I mean the look of him in general.

My avatar is how I imagined Jon and it's one of the few accepted ones by GRRM (He never states one official though) and is the one that will be selling in the Calendar I ordered.

Now if Thomas Dekker, the pretty guy who can't get his nails dirty get the job of Jon Snow :sag

That's like spitting me in the face.

    I also can
But to be honest, I would prefer new and young actors for some roles

Experienced actors for more "senior roles"

Agreed, however that guy can be made looking younger, and some characters will be aged up as the producers said on X forum.

I would still prefer no established names but with talent for the Younger cast and the experienced actors for the older cast

It's actually always a good decision to make a series successful, then younger cast learns something from the older one while managing to create a name for themselfs

I'd prefer unknown names, good for the budget and you won't know exactly how they'll portray the role.

Characters that would be short lived would be good to have some known actors :hehee

I was thinking Black Water level fights
However, that's only on the second book though. If we are lucky, the budget will be way higher then
Thinking now... All the large fights are only in the "A Clash of Kings" and "A Storm of Swords"

Everything else is just little skirmishes

Most fights take place off stage, and if any fight is a big fight in the first book it's Whispering Woods.
