So... really? Why didn't he just kill Nanou some time after recruiting Kabuto? Why bother sending her false photos of him for years? Why send her to kill Kabuto, so they would kill each other, instead of killing him by himself? It's kinda dumb and pointless.

Why did he let him return to the village for years and take part in the exams? You think Danzou isn't aware of the students in the academy? The guy who kidnaps talented kids? Don't give me that crap about him and Orochimaru still working together, because Danzou tried to kill Kabuto regardless of his ties to Orochimaru.

But maybe they sent Danzou false photos of Kabuto so he never made the connnection :zaru

Maybe he enjoys making people suffer by letting/ordering them to kill the ones they love?

It's apparently his way to ensure his followers are emotionless tools: Nonou loved the orphans and Kabuto, Kabuto loved Nonou, thus they weren't "perfect", coz they had feelings. ROOT kids had to kill each other as part of their training to get rid of their selves and emotions.

Plus Kabuto and Nonou should still be used for Danzo's benefit until they were rendered useless.

He didn't want it known that he was involved, it's perfect getting two spies to off each other.

One possibility is that Orochimaru lied and did all the fake photos himself in order to set it up that Kabuto would join him.

Pretty much this:thumbs they were given an assignment by ROOT and like Oro said the both of them knew too much and by having carried it out he saw them as a threat

I'd say it's pretty smart. First he gets as much useful information out of them as possible and then he has them neatly kill each other once they became liabilities instead of assets.

Problem with this is that he set it up so that Nonou WOULDN'T know it was a loved one she was killing, so she couldn't suffer from it. He also intended to have Kabuto die in the same scuffle, so he likely expected Kabuto not to notice in time.

He could have killed them off much more easily, or planted seals on them as he did Sai, so this whole plot was kind of pointless.

There is nothing indicating that he intended psychological torture though.

it makes perfect sense.if an organization would let know that it disposes of its own people so easily how many would have wanted to work for it?

Well, Kabuto expected his "mother" to be fine otherwise I don't see him working with the roots. They also found her useful and, as they said, she was one of the best spies, ever.Even if Kabuto survived her attack he would still be confused and empty which people like Danzo exploits.

Also Orochimaro managed to play Danzo by forcing him to either forget about Kabuto, and let him live his life, or take a giant risk by leaving the shadows and possible face a massive investigation because you can't just assassinate a a mere student without facing some sort of consequence.

For Danzo it's not a big deal to solve "emotional problems" of others as shown in Danzo vs. Sasuke, when the former tried to "correct" Itachi's "mistake".

But I don't really know, why he would go the complicated route. Unless Oro had lied about this.

Danzo is so caring and loving towards his root members he didn't want any of them were in danger by fighting kabuto/mother.

    Spoiler:
Or he just like mother vs son fights because he is a pimp :beardthing

He still needed Nono to gather information. You know, she one was of his best spies...

I think there is a fair amount of sadism.

But logically, if Danzo is cold blooded and logical instead of the sadistic egomaniac I think he is, then it's likely that Nono was simply the most qualified to intercept another deep cover agent.

Think about it. If there's actually information that he doesn't want to get back to Konoha channels, then it's logical to prevent the agent from returning to Konoha. Now you can't just kill a deep cover agent. 1) The village will think you just assassinated one of their people. 2) You don't want them to KNOW you had a deep cover agent in the first place. So you set it up so you have to Iwa-nin in this case die in a squabble or something. Or a spy killing a spy. With both dead, no one knows what village they were from to begin with. Much cleaner than sending in a squad.

But it was a mutual kill plan. Danzo didn't expect Kabuto to advance far enough to kill Nonou outright. And Orochimaru was apparently supposed to waste the winner in that case.
