Default If minimum wage isn't meant to be a living wage....

Should people just laid off be forced to not make a living wage if they can't find a job in their field?

Should recent graduates who are having to search for a job for months and months be forced into extremely hard financial situations and never be able to afford to travel for interviews?

Should college students receiving no help from parents be forced into poverty or flat out not be able to afford college and never finish?

If ANY circumstance only allows for a minimum wage job for a period of time, should the person be relegated to a job where they cannot provide for themselves with a living wage? If they are hurt, are hit with a financial burden, have to pay high medical bills, etc. should they go bankrupt and dive into poverty?

Does America have morals anymore? Do we even care about each other? Is a person's welfare dependent on if a business's structure allows for a decent wage instead of a profit?

Here is an idea Doge! Get rid of the income tax and the min wage will be fine! You're not making 7.25 with income tax more like 6 bucks an hour or less.

Exactly this; the true evil in this world is apathy.

Non-living wages would be "acceptable" for temporary periods if people had savings instead of living on a tight budget, but considering the reality of student debt and the financial situation of the lower half of the population, this is obviously not possible in the USA.

I think a better question is "if the minimum wage isn't meant to be a living wage then what the hell is the point?".

The whole idea is to set a floor in quality of life that we as a society aren't going to let anyone who is working full time to fall below.

I've always been confused why we can't all agree that someone who actually works full time every day shouldn't live in utter poverty.

$7.25 straight up is not a living wage, and inflation will keep pushing that wage's worth down. Getting rid of the income tax does nothing to fix the problem.

Why aren't you advocating "for the markets" to set wages? Oh wait, we did that before and people lived in slums. Oh wait, demand for jobs never goes down because people need something in order to get some sort of sustenance.

You don't care about people. You cite being a good Christian, yet you don't want the poor to have healthcare affordable to them, you don't think they should get a living wage and not live on the brink of going into poverty if ANYTHING happens to them, and you certainly don't think businesses should have any sense of morality coming from paying workers enough to get by. You think people are attracted to Christianity when those same people of the good faith oppress the poor?

Tell me, where in the good book does it say to keep wages down and purposely avoid paying the poor a decent wage WHEN IT IS CLEARLY POSSIBLE? You are a hypocrite, you have no answer to me because you bark out the GOP's agenda and have bought into the lies that the bottom 50% are all welfare munching bums.

Simply because we've been convinced we must work hard to ensure the profit, and if businesses don't agree with paying a living wage, they have every right to exploit their workers in the most immoral fashion.

Of course, you can't live on those wages unless you come in with a strong and wealthy background. Otherwise, you start off on the brink of poverty.

Zaru?

i think in the usa you can live on a minimum wage salary. the thing is that won't live well. mini is basically the lowest possible bit of income you could survive with if you're in perfect health and forgo your personal space. furthermore, the spirit of mini doesn't really dictate or require you be able to go beyond it. mini is the shit tier amount for being able to survive with shelter and not starve too death. at least this is what proponents of maintaining or lowering it always preach....

as for a living wage, i have never really liked that term. what does a living wage entail? how the hell can you estimate that given col varies from state to state?

usa mini just needs to move up to canada and problem solved...

Basically MIT's calculator is the best gauge for a living wage. http://livingwage.mit.edu/

It's got every county, city, whatever you can think of. The biggest issues with a low mini are people can only buy the bare minimum to everything, if something pushes them they will fall right into poverty. And in many places, the line is extremely close.
