George Morikawa himself said that Ricardo was the second strongest fighter in the series and Miyata was the third. So... Yeah...

Was that before or after Sendo handed Miyata his ass?

When did that fight happen. I wanna see scans. Miyata in sparring and Miyata in fighting are vastly different in pace. Anyways, a dead-on Jolt Counter is a bitch to tank. Maybe more so due to his precise nature. Miyata can knock almost any person out if he gets one shot of that attack, seeing how it uses the concept of "Jolt" which places all the weight of you, plus your opponent multiplied.

It was shortly before Miyata's fight with Randy Boy jr.

Sendo was traveling around Japan to spar with powerful opponents. He went to Miyata's gym and provoked Miyata into a serious spar.

However, Miyata got cocky and went easy on Sendo after he repeatedly countered Sendo's smash.

Second round, Sendo then went all out and nearly downed Miyata with a very powerful punch(Miyata's head was against the pole, and Sendo was in position for a full powered straight, if it followed through, Miyata 'd have been seriously injured), but chose to miss the attack on purpose to show Miyata he could take him down easily.

Except Miyata was not anywhere near peak condition. Sendo would probably be beaten if he took RBJ's place in the actual fight. Anyway it is pretty clear Martinez takes this.

If Sendo wasn't there to spar with Miyata in the first place, Miyata would never have realised how easily his punches could have been predicted. The same result would then have occurred.

But yes I agree, Martinez takes this.

When did the author say Miyata is the third strongest boxer in the series? I thought Vorg was always portrayed as Ippo's strongest featherweight rival?

That's not what we mean Ryu. He is actually the third strongest fighter in the series, and also has a "shift" mode which he recently learned, called Lightning God. Where he has extreme focus and moves in a way similar to Itagaki while he uses Bullet Time. Miyata is also much faster than Ippo is and much less reckless, he would give Martinez at least a good fight with his counter attacks. Ippo also didn't have as much speed as he has now.

I think it also said Ippo was about, 7th.

How do you see the fight going down, Gomu?

Ricardo is someone with speed and power comparable to Takamura. He is also able to easily and effortlessly beat one of the strongest fighters in the manga (Date) without much effort on two occasions. He also made Ippo look like a school kid and used only his left jab while he was about to use his signature technique, though Ricardo had plenty of time to study and counter it and Ippo still hadn't sealed and refined it yet that's still a feat.

Miyata is a genius in the use of counter blows, and is able to take off-guard most characters with his speed. However, due to his haphazard methods of training he is often never at his peak fighting ability and is always with a handicap, though this is no excuse for boxing as he knows exactly what he is doing. He is gifted in use of speed and reflexes and is noted as one of the fastest characters in the series with Itagaki being compared to him (you know the one who can bullet time punches as if slow motion and attack like a maniac with only left jabs so quick other people can't see them). He is also known for his rivalry with Ippo and thus has a comparable willpower to Ippo's own, though that is not enough to win a fight (at least not for Miyata, as that's how Ippo wins most of his fights).

These two combatants are strong but here's the thing. Ricardo has never been shown to lose composure in fights as far as matches are concerned. He also has more experience than Miyata as he is well on his prime at 30 something years old. Though he shows no chance of slowing down so far. Ricardo is capable of a strong and fast left jab and an extremely powerful right straight. Miyata is capable of different counters and technical skills that have made him a threat to anyone who doesn't know how to contend with his counters. He is also one of the fastest characters in the series, though that only counts when the opponent you're facing can't keep up with your speed as Martinez being almost equal to Takamura (who has as much speed as a feather weight class, which is extremely fast in the Ippoverse) leads him to have the speed and reflexes that are comparable to that feather weight class as well.

Miyata will probably last due to his willpower, but not by a lot, as Ricardo isn't someone known to pull punches towards anyone and fights to his fullest degree as seen by Date and the group. Though he did commend Date, even Date knew he couldn't win. It all counts on Miyata's ability to use his Jolt Counter and Blade Counters which are powerful strokes of his fist during counter attacks. Miyata cannot win however. As Ricardo would win due to his ability to fight on a much calmer field of battle, his experience, and his incredible strength.

If they were ever to fight, Miyata would outlast Date, but would still be defeated.

You answered my question how? So the author never said that but you're all saying he is the next strongest based on his showings or am I misinterpreting and he straight out said Miyata is #3? I'm only asking because reading all of Ippo I can't remember when Miyata was ever considered vastly superior to Ippo and a top tier boxer who could challenge Martinez. Unless I'm forgetting a comment somewhere where somebody said Miyata could challenge Martinez relatively soon, in boxing time, giving Martinez a good fight sounds baseless. Unless you mean as good as Date.

Dude. The only reason why Ippo won the battle in sparring was because he hit his chin with a 1 Centimeter punch. Miyata was not at all serious.

"George Morikawa, the author of Hajime No Ippo, named the top three boxers in chapter 361 of the manga. The strongest pound-for-pound boxer is, without a doubt, Takamura. Ranking second is Ricardo Martinez. Surprisingly, he names Miyata as the third best boxer and Ippo around the 8th place."

Press F3, search Hajime no Ippo.

I still feel the gap between Ricardo and everyone else in that weight class (based off what we've seen) is still pretty big. Miyata would lose and Ricardo would be a very decisive winner.

Not without Miyata doing some pretty big damage to him, however.

Sounds farfetched. Maybe some damage but nothing serious.

Dude. Nobody said dick about their sparring match in the 10th grade. As if that has any bearing on who is stronger overall for either boxer.

Thank you. Though it still seems odd as again Vorg is depicted in the manga as the strongest and closest to the top(both in skill&opportunity for a title) of Ippo's rivals.

Really confused how Ippo is 8th? Does the include Brian Hawk, Vorg, David Eagle, Prime Date, Randy Boy Jr. above Ippo but below Miyata. If so, again makes no sense.

Miyata wouldn't to a damn thing to him.

Miyata's punches are too light. Miyata's has no speed advantage, no skill or intuitive advantage, and no opening or bad habits to exploit.

Ricardo dominates Miyata in power, durability, endurance, and the ability to control the space/etc of the ring. Of course the last thing was something Miyata noted Taka was really good at (miyata also had no way to deal with it), but the same likely goes for Ricardo as well.

It wouldn't be a close fight at all. Ricardo would simply destroy him.

Ps: Even if "Razor sharp Miyata" was above the perfect weight control one date destroyed, II doubt the speed difference would be that drastic.

Of course Miyata's punches are too light, that why Counter attacks are used instead because Counters increase the output due to the opponents off-balance stance and awareness giving Miyata in edge while using it. While using the Jolt, He completely decimated Arnie, even while he didn't do much in the fight due to his bloody cross. His regular punches are light but his counters are heavy. And that's what Miyata is going to use. If he listened to Takumura he would know he'd need to use a certain angle to get the maximum efficiency from counter strikes.
