Bryke didn't make (or want to make) the series specifically for boys but in order for them to get an OK from the studio, it had to pass the boys' standards because apparently "Conventional TV wisdom has it that girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won't watch shows about girls."

When I said scratched the surface, I gave it a sample. I ended up being off-put by what they were possibly going to morph her into so I stopped. Not necessarily judging a book by its cover but seeing the future to come and certainly dreading what the ambiance around it is going to create. You can try something once and never again. She doesn't have any curves from what i've seen in sets and pictures. That might be why Rios and others think she looks like a dude. I thought she looked like a dude too from the sets I've seen. Haven't watched the cartoon yet but the thick clothes hiding her body and the manish face can throw a nigga off.
I think a good portion of the people watching Alex Mack didn't have as many expectations, idiocies, or inadequacies as they would watching Naruto or Korra. I mean...just look at the pairing fandom already for Korra. It hasn't even kicked off and already they've formed camps.
What the fuck happened?!? You didn't see this crap when the Ghostbusters had that cute redhead secretary/assistant. There was no Lion-O/Cheetara or Tygra/Cheetara war (even if the Thundercats lore later confirmed the latter).
The creators should have just erased any romantic hinting. I know that's what I would have done unless I'm Japanese and in the mood for a good troll. Korra would be better off being a wanderer righting wrongs while learning her bending.

The internet is the main issue where pairings are concerned.This is where most if of the shitstorms originate and take place. Alex Mack came out during the mid-to-late 1990's, so the internet was not as big then.
Also, there weren't too many pairing opportunities, anyway.
Pairings can have little to nothing to do with the writers of a story. The wars are driven by fans despite any hints that a writer drops are doesn't. Often it is clear what an author wants to do regarding romance, but that won't stop some readers/viewers from pushing their OTP's. I think that even there were not hints regarding romance in the Legend of Korra, someone would manage to pair her up with just about anyone she ran into (even and enemy for that manner). I understand that you may be put off by the possibility of Korra being limited by a pairing, but the only ones who do that are a number of fans and not the writers.

Well again i was going by the sets i saw from some people. I saw blue's set where dude looks like he's about to smack her ass and i thought i saw some bromance going on but then i actually saw the show and she looked nothing like a dude. She can get it. She can get it hard.
I love how a female lead can't be fit and assertive with a small-medium bust without being called a guy. I'm sorry, but she looks as much of a girl as a sporty girl can be. I'm sorry that she doesn't have DDs nor wears a skirt.
